Who am I?
My name is Teresa Spencer and I am the Client Care Coordinator and a Resident in Counseling working towards my LPC license. I grew up in Williamsburg and attended James Madison University where I received my bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies. I spent the next ten years in Northern Virginia where I worked for an adoption agency and a consulting company. During my time there, I decided to go back to school and pursue a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling from Liberty University.
Life is full of challenges and no one should have to walk through it alone. I believe people were created to live in community with each other, learning, growing, and encouraging one another. I believe inner freedom is found when we invite others into the messiest and most painful parts of our lives to help us process and bring to light our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
I love working with:
Adolescents and young adults who are struggling with anxiety, life transitions, self-esteem, and relationship issues. I also enjoy facilitating group therapy.
Some of my favorite approaches include:
My goal in therapy is to provide hope and encouragement to those I serve, helping clients realize that complete healing is possible, and the power to change ultimately lies within themselves. For this reason, I use a collaborative approach to therapy, actively listening to clients and working together to determine the best path forward for change to occur, while guided by a cognitive behavioral (CBT) framework.
In addition to trust, I believe humility is one of the most important aspects of the therapeutic relationship, acknowledging that clients are the experts on themselves, and as the therapist, I look to you to help me better understand your experiences and struggles, as well as your hopes and dreams.
For successful therapy to take place, I strive to create a comfortable space for hard conversations, knowing that through the pain, healing and peace are found. My desire is to serve those who are hurting in the best way possible by instilling hope and encouraging clients that a life of freedom is not far off.
